WWII veteran and Star Trek actor James Doohan dead at 85.

I had the fortune of meeting the gentleman a couple of times, a few years ago, for a few minutes each time. During our few minutes of conversation at Chiller Theatre, or our extended conversation at a comic book convention (where there was no line for him at all), he was the sweetest guy around. A more jovial and friendly guy you'll be hard pressed to find. His autobiography's not a bad read either, if you're a fan of the original series.

I beat you to the punch, for once!

However, it does not surprise me that you have a picture of yourself with him. Your celebrity photograph skills are unparalleled.

You beat me to the punch, and I found out from [livejournal.com profile] jenniever who probably read it in your journal. So you totally win.

I don't have THAT many celebrities in my gallery, it's really only from a couple of conventions.

I should go to more.

You should come to NYC.

I'll be in upstate for an as-yet-undetermined amount of time for a wedding next month.

I'll be sans car, though.

Woah, cool

What time next month? I've got plans early in the month (brother in town, wedding stuff, blah blah blah), and I'm uber-busy at work late in the month. Still, I might be able to drive up at some point.

Re: Woah, cool

I believe the wedding itself is on the 21st. We're still finalizing plans as to when we'll actually be there.

Re: Woah, cool

That's after my brother's gone and before training week at work, so I might be able to see you.

Keep me posted.

Don't forget that we have futons and fold-out couches and shit if you can make it down here, too.

Re: True

It's well worth watching at some point.

There's a few good moments with Doohan. He has one gushing speech about the wave of love that flows over him at conventions that's kind of creepy, and then there's the touching story of the suicidal woman that he kept alive by inviting her to conventions.

Re: i just heard on the radio

It's funny because I wouldn't be caught dead in a PS2 shirt now, and now he's dead.

[livejournal.com profile] petemagyar'll be bummed tonight. ``Why couldn't it be LeVar Burton??''

that's the second person featured in ITC to subsequently die, following ODB in November. anyone want to take bets who the next one will be? I'm betting on George Bush Sr, he's pretty old and also it would be cool if he died.

yeah, it's pretty crazy. i dunno, personally i'd like to see George W. Bush go next. but that's a given.

From: [identity profile] towelboy.livejournal.com

probably not

but if i'm going to be arrested for something, that would be worth it. FUCK GEORGE W. BUSH.

I try to have compassion for that man. All his life he has been the pawn and puppet of people smarter and cagier than himself, and you can see from his perpetual "where'd I leave my keys" look that he is in a constant state of confusion and almost certainly low-grade panic as well. there is a bit of God, a bit of all of us, trapped in him and it is lost and alone and scared and it has no idea what is happening. whatever his karma is it is not going to be fun when the time comes to collect. I'd still like to see him get impeached of course.
