This is fucking hilarious. Batman ain't no Fortunate Son.

After the randomness of last weekend, I think this one will be quiet. There was mysteriously the perfect number of hangers to stay at my sweetie's place last week. And I got to see Clockwatchers, the film my sweetie described as the female Ofice Space. While there are a number of differences, they can really be summed up that simply. We got to go to Mt. Fuji for her birthday, and Ken sang again. We played the new version of Trivial Persuit, and I stayed at a hotel with her the night before a swim meet, keeping her company. We went out to Long Island, and I got to meet some friends of her who were connected to both one of my ex's and her cousin's girlfriend through some university down south. Crazy.

[livejournal.com profile] csmole and I have been enjoying Gibson's blog. Yeah, he's still my favoritte author. Yes, he's still overrated yet amazingly cool in suprising ways. Took him this long to get online, eh?

"The savage novel of a lesbian on the loose!"

Fuck, I just wrote a whole long reply and lost it showing [livejournal.com profile] runstaverun something.

Anyway, yeah, I not only recognized the book, I recognized the title of the website from the title of the book.

That book had a hilarious fucking plot. Here's my summary:

Self-made man gets a job at a restaurant, and flirts with the owner. Kind of like Pacey last season on Dawson's Creek. So the two have an affair, and end up getting married. The woman is then too busy for sex, and they grow distant. The woman's lesbian sister comes to town, and I think even moves in with them. She flirts with the man, and ends up sleeping with him. She never orgasms, but they continue to sleep together. The two decide to run off together, after getting tons of money from the wife/sister they're running around behind the back of. Plans are rolling, the man has made the right steps to get a chunk of the woman's fortune, when he catches the sister sleeping with another woman. She was never interested in him, just in robbing her sister, and was still a lesbian! That's why she never came! That's honestly how they explain it all out. So the sister was going to use him to get the money and run with her lover. The man stops the plans, feels horrible, and crawls back to his wife. The wife/sister, it turns out, knew they had been sleeping together. So what happens next?

She takes him back. She was so happy that her sister had finally started sleeping with a man, she didn't care that it was her husband, she was just so happy her sister was being normal. So they live happily ever after.

WHAT THE FUCK?

Gibson

I think he's overrated as a writer, certainly, but not as a storyteller, an important distinction. I don't know about you, but I found he kept me absolutely spellbound when I first read him. I don't know that it was exactly an epiphany, but it was certainly something profound. I'd never been that interested in a book before. He kept me spellbound not through writing technique, but in the need to see how it all panned out.
A problem I see is that he's often seen as William Gibson, the visionary, not simply as William Gibson, the storyteller.

Re: Gibson

Oh, hell yeah, his writing is fucking amazing. Bruce Sterling needs to get over himself, he's no Gibson.

But yeah, you're right... overrated as a visionary, not as a storyteller.

Still love his shit, just not all of the other fanboys of his shit.
