Dear [livejournal.com profile] graye, [livejournal.com profile] spicyeggplant, [livejournal.com profile] malahat, and crew,

Like, what should I bring?

Obviously I should grab some toiletries (plenty of contacts this time unlike [livejournal.com profile] wideathtrip), camping supplies, and clothing. What's the dress code for the time spent there? I want to hit one of the ``finest sushi in the world'' joints, and otherwise see what the area has to offer. Barring any crazy place like the Safehouse where I should dress in a particular way, what's the norm? Camping, obviously, I can dress down for.

What else should I bring along?

[livejournal.com profile] jenniever, what's the dress code for our side of the border? I know you've got relatives and friends and all these random people we're staying with/visiting/whatever. Will they drag us out to black-tie affairs? Should I bring my shiny fancy proper shoes at all? What's the dress code for the Microsoft campus? I think one of my suits needs dry cleaned.

Is there anything from this location, the center of the universe, that people might want exported by hand? Bagels and pork roll won't make it to Vancouver, much less Victoria.

Couldn't I take a culture from your hat and cultivate some sort of penicillin with it?

From: [identity profile] graye.livejournal.com

Yeah, I don't think we're going anywhere too dressy. Fuck, man, most of the time we're going to be camping.

For camping, be sure to bring comfortable clothes, suitable for drinking.

As for shit like finest sushi in the world joints, best I can recommend is dressy/casual.

Goddamn it, now I have to think about this. I'm relying on [livejournal.com profile] infraredelf to pin down a sushi joint, because I don't know whats up with that stuff. She has a good place in mind, though. How dressy is it? No clue.

Normally I just wear burlap and dress in rags.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

Drinking clothing? Ok.

Band shirts and shorts it is!

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

[livejournal.com profile] jenniever just reminded me:

Your contact information would be handy.

I've got your cell number from [livejournal.com profile] wideathtrip, I assume that's still valid?

From: [identity profile] jenniever.livejournal.com

Dear Graye -

In order for us to complete our pilgrimage to Victoria in order to stand in awe of you, we need directions from the Anacortes ferry to your place of residence.

Also, shall we book pre-camping camping? Or might you have a couch we could borrow? Either way, we will have a car the entire time we'll be there. Also, also, is there a camping (or painting) store nearby where we might purchase a cheap plastic tarp for below our tent? I have yet to do that and I don't know that I'll have time before we head out.

I'll probably have more questions. Also, I'm terribly giddy for all of this. [livejournal.com profile] assfingers secretly talks you up when no-one is looking. But I didn't say that.

per NIGHT?

Hon, I just spent $80-$100 CDN on a new sleeping bag for you. Are you sure you don't like camping?

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

I like camping, but I also would like to see the town after hearing so much about it from [livejournal.com profile] graye and crew, not to mention Paul. We'll still be spending most of our time camping.

From: [identity profile] jenniever.livejournal.com

Ok, wait, I should hold my tongue. Expenses on this trip are being kept pretty low thus far. I suppose we could do that with little to no trouble.

We'll talk tomorrow.

Sorry, I'm used to having to always be super-careful with money, so that seems a big high for me when there's camping and we have a tent. I'm getting the AAA (or, in this case, CAA) guides (Camping and Regular) tomorrow before work. We can price things out after that. I think I can get a much better price than that, though, and still get us a nice bed and maybe a pool and no fear of Canadian Bed Lice. I'm good, man. I'm real good.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

I've been saving for the trip, you've been saving, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I trust you can get a better price, that price was from two minutes of looking.

I also really want to see the gardens.

From: [identity profile] andamaroo.livejournal.com

I propose all LJ trips made by any member of the collective us should be posted about and coordinated through the Wisconsin Death Trip community.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

We might want to spend the $15 and rename it to LJDEATHTRIP or something generic like that.

Unless you really want British Columbia compared to Wisconsin.

Bring a flamethrower, to burninate all them Commie Canucks, "Canuckies" if you will. This will also ensure ample warmth and food supply as all Canadians are made from delicious sausages.

Visiting Microsoft campus? That's pretty cool. :) I've wanted to go there for years. You'll have to proffer a full report of amenities, atmosphere and how hard Gates laughs upon mention of Longhorn.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

It's been a dream of mine for a while to see the campus, and supposedly we'll be able to get a fairly in-depth tour.

From: [identity profile] angrybunnyman.livejournal.com

How'd you swing it? Are there regular tours? I'll be out there in September and would love to get a tour of The Grand Evil.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

I swung it by dating an amazing and powerful woman. [livejournal.com profile] jenniever's people who knows people.

While this is a family connection, she's got the ability to swing backstage access and the like at events, and has done so in the past.

From: [identity profile] jenniever.livejournal.com

I think just casual clothes will be fine. I'm going to pack one nice outfit and have everything else range from hiking to hanging out clothes.

The people we are visiting are the people who taught me how to survive on a river for three days without ever seeing civilisation. They only thing they will require of you is a sturdy pair of boots and a swimsuit. And your sense of humour.

I purchased a sleeping bag for you because I didn't have a second. I hope that's ok. It should come today or tomorrow. You can take a look.

Also: Tonight I'd like to make an appointment with you to make packing lists, go over luggage, set up my tent, review the itinerary and google at finances.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

Ok, I'll have to find my sense of humor and make sure I pack it.

Other than watching two episodes of Deep Space 9, I'm free tonight.

birkenstocks and sushi

You will, of course, be required to wear birkenstocks with wool socks the entire length of your stay. Anything else would be incredibly offensive to the locals. [livejournal.com profile] graye has a lovely pair of half-clogs to go with his cargo shorts and wool sweater. Bring something wool or windproof for camping.

Victoria is exceedingly casual for dress. The sushi joint I was thinking of is a bit on the shabby side, but makes what seems to be some of the best sushi in town at a decent price. And they have a Chirashi bowl on the menu, which I believe I've heard you go on about before.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

Re: birkenstocks and sushi

*whew* I thought I was going to have to wear suspenders and hats with those little ear flaps the whole time.

Sounds like I'll be sticking to my usual slacks/shorts/t-shirts while up there. For camping, I was planning on bringing a light windbreaker and my thick trenchcoat with zip-out lining.

And yes, thank you, I'm a huge fan of Chirashi. Chirashi and all you can eat joints make [livejournal.com profile] kingfox a happy camper. I'm looking forward to it.

Oh yeah, and if you're in the mood for hibachi, this place in Vancouver was good (and the cocktail waitresses had interesting uniforms).

Do not, under any circumstances, go to Yokohama in Victoria.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

Re: Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Vancouver won't be a major stop, we're spending more time in Seattle and Victoria. Vancouver mostly exists as where we catch the ferry from, and I picked that over the other options just so I could see the town. Err, wait. I thought I said Vancouver, but looking at the reservations [livejournal.com profile] jenniever made, it looks like we're going out of the place near Seattle. Crap. Must talk to her.

To see a uniform like that, I'd trek hours out of the way.

What's wrong with Yokohama? Service? Food? Surly anti-Yankee resentment?

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

Re: Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Oh, it seems that everyone and their grandmother told [livejournal.com profile] jenniever to take the ferry from Anacortes instead of Vancouver, so no Vancouver for us this trip.

But tell me about Yokohama.

From: [identity profile] celaeno.livejournal.com

Re: Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

*Googles Anacortes*

Looks like it only leaves twice per day - might want to see how far in advance you need to get there to get on it. Mike and I ran into that problem taking the Coho Ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles on the Olympic peninsula - we thought being there a couple hours in advance would've been good enough, but we really should've been there about 4 hours in advance.

The ferry from Vancouver, or more accurately Tsawwassen, isn't too bad when it doesn't break down (happened the last time we went up but we were told they're usually reliable). They also run more frequently, especially in the summer, so if you were to miss the Anacortes one, that'd still be an option for getting to the island.

Okay, Yokohama just plain sucked. Apparently it used to be really good but in the past few years just declined in quality. The food was about on par with stuff you can get for about $5 from a food vendor cart on the street, but was a lot more expensive than that. The place looked like it could use a good cleaning, too. Not worth going at all.

Re: Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Oh, we've already got tickets bought for taking the ferry from Anacortes, I remember your horror stories of catching the ferry in the past. Some of my friends in Wisconsin have a similar tale from when they visited [livejournal.com profile] graye and crew ages ago.

We might still do Vancouver as a side trip, but not as where we're ferrying out from.

I'm assuming that the place [livejournal.com profile] infraredelf has in mind isn't Yokohama, and will keep that name in mind while there. After hearing about how great the sushi is in that town for years, I'm really excited about trying it.

Re: Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Even with reservations, check when you need to be there. It's a different company that runs the one you'll be on and the one out of Tsawwassen, but we learned from people waiting on the broken down ferry that reservations aren't necessarily going to be honored if the lot is filling up.

You may be going to the Japanese Village restaurant which I think is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, Japanese restaurant in Victoria. I'd have to agree with that.

From: [identity profile] kingfox.livejournal.com

Re: Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

Ok, thanks for the heads-up. We decided to rent just one car for the two weeks, otherwise we could just hop on over there as pedestrians, but I still think we're doing things the easiest way in the end.

I hope that's the one. If not, I might just try the Village as well while there.

Any places you recommend we check out while there? I know we're mostly going to be camping, and we're friends with tons of locals, but sometimes locals take certain things for granted that tourists really enjoy seeing. Like sightseeing in NYC with relatives, I forget that not everyone's been to St. John the Unfinished.

The former looks really awesome. Paul described the latter, but indicated that I could skip it as I've been to Madame Tussaud's.

Thanks!

Re: hey

It was great seeing you as well, and I can understand regarding graduation. It's a bit of a hike, but I kept an eye out for you.

Things are well with me, if a bit busy at times.

[livejournal.com profile] jenniever says hi as well.
